Webinar: Applying for Writing Residencies

Webinar Flyer
A little more detail:

WHO: I’ll be leading the webinar. Who am I? A question I ask myself every birthday.

I worked in the editorial departments of Victoria Sanders & Associates and Cambridge University Press. I am a 2013 Pushcart Prize nominee, 2014 Jentel Foundation Artist in Residence, and 2015 Caldera Arts, Kimmel Harding Nelson, and Hedgebrook Artist in Residence. I am also a proud alum of the Voices of Our Nations Arts Foundation (VONA) 2010 Fiction Workshop with Tananarive Due and the 2013 Fiction Workshop with Junot Diaz. Starting September, I will be participating in the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s nine-month Workspace artist residency program. AND I have experience as a judge on a selection panel for a residency (can’t get specific with which one just yet).

You can view a longer bio here.

This webinar will cover:
-the purpose of a writing residency
-where to search for residencies
-what is the right residency for YOU
-organizing yourself (what I like to call becoming One with the spreadsheet)
-what’s commonly asked for on applications (we will go through the application itself, artist statement, bio, statement of intent, project description, resume, writing sample, references and recommendation letters)
-actual applications (we will look at 3 actual residency applications together)
-what happens after an acceptance (preparing practically & mentally)
-what happens after a rejection (coping with disappointment, reasons for rejection besides quality of work, and moving forward)There will be time Q&A.

WHEN: Thursday, August 20th at 6:30pm (Eastern time)

WHERE: Online. You only need a computer to view the presentation AND either working speakers or a telephone to listen in. The webinar will be recorded and shared with registered participants regardless of whether you attend the live webinar.

HOW: (We’re skipping WHY because you’re the WHY.) The webinar fee is $30, payable via paypal, Google Wallet or Chase quickpay only, anytime before the day of the webinar. After receipt of payment, you’ll receive a link to register with instructions.

Feel free to share. In the meantime, here’s a popular post on the dreaded artist statement. Hope to see you logged in on the 20th!
