Space manufacturing felt
NASA's Office of the Chief Technologist OCT has begun to rebuild the advanced space technology program in the agency with plans laid out in 14 draft technology roadmaps. It has been years since NASA has had a vigorous, broad-based program in advanced space technology development and its technology base has been largely depleted. However, success in executing future NASA space missions will depend on advanced technology developments that should already be underway. Reaching out to involve the external technical community, the National Research Council NRC considered the 14 draft technology roadmaps prepared by OCT and ranked the top technical challenges and highest priority technologies that NASA should emphasize in the next 5 years. This report provides specific guidance and recommendations on how the effectiveness of the technology development program managed by OCT can be enhanced in the face of scarce resources. Statement of Task.

3D Printing Rockets in Outer Space? This Company’s Going for It
The potential of desktop 3D printing has been covered extensively by the media. But many feel the true impact of this technology will be felt at the industrial level, where companies in different sectors hope to use additive manufacturing to make better products at a lower cost. The technology could soon be used to help make airplanes, automobiles, space stations, medical models and sensors — even organs—while also radically transforming our traditional supply chains. But at what cost? And what has to happen to ensure that this tremendous potential is reached? In the Beyond the Desktop video series, we speak with people from startups, hospitals, long-established companies, government and academia to understand how additive manufacturing will impact how we make things. From airplanes to space stations, the technology provides complexity at a low cost.

MakerBot was among the first to develop desktop versions of 3D printers that put additive manufacturing within reach of a new generation of entrepreneurs and product developers. Initially it saw sales grow fast but they hit a wall when widespread consumer interest failed to materialize. The report notes there were companies selling industrial 3D printing systems in , up from 97 the previous year. Demand is particularly strong in industries such as medical devices, automotive, aerospace, defense and heavy industrial equipment. Most fabrics are woven, meaning they are constructed on a loom and have interlocking warp the thread or fiber that is strung lengthwise on the loom and weft the thread that cuts across the warp fiber and interlocks with it fibers that create a flat piece of fabric. Felt is a dense, non-woven fabric and without any warp or weft. Instead, felted fabric is made from matted and compressed fibers or fur with no apparent system of threads. Felt is generally composed of wool that is mixed with a synthetic in order to create sturdy, resilient felt for craft or industrial use.
