Guide to Manufacturing Processes for Plastics

Typically, the plastic bottles used to hold potable water and other drinks are made from polyethylene terephthalate PET , because the material is both strong and light. Polyethylene Terephthalate or PET, as it is commonly referred to is a thermoplastic polymer that can be either opaque or transparent, depending on the exact material composition. As with most plastics, PET is produced from petroleum hydrocarbons, through a reaction between ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid.

To produce plastic bottles, the PET is first polymerized to create long molecular chains. Polymerization itself can be a complicated process, and accounts for many of the inconsistencies between one batch of manufactured PET and another. Typically, two kinds of impurities are produced during polymerization: diethylene glycol and acetaldehyde. Although diethylene glycol is generally not produced in high-enough amounts to affect PET, acetaldehyde can not only be produced during polymerization but also during the bottle manufacturing process.

A large amount of acetaldehyde in PET used for bottle manufacturing can give the beverage inside an odd taste. Once the plastic itself has been manufactured, the bottle manufacturing process can begin. To ensure that the PET is appropriate for use, numerous tests are done post-manufacturing to check that the bottles are impermeable by carbon dioxide which is important for bottles that carry soda. Other factors, such as transparency, gloss, shatter resistance, thickness and pressure resistance, are also carefully monitored.

The first stage in bottle manufacturing is stretch blow molding. The PET is heated and placed in a mold, where it assumes the shape of a long, thin tube the process by which the plastic is forced into the mold is called injection molding. The tube of PET, now called a parison , is then transferred into a second, bottle-shaped mold.

To ensure that the bottom of the bottle retains a consistently flat shape, a separate component of plastic is simultaneously joined to the bottle during blow molding. The mold must be cooled relatively quickly, so that that the newly formed component is set properly.

There are several cooling methods, both direct and indirect, that can effectively cool the mold and the plastic. Water can be coursed through pipes surrounding the mold, which indirectly cools the mold and plastic.

Direct methods include using pressurized air or carbon dioxide directly on the mold and plastic. Once the bottle or, in continuous manufacturing, bottles has cooled and set, it is ready to be removed from the mold. If a continuous molding process has been used, the bottles will need to be separated by trimming the plastic in between them. If a non-continuous process has been used, sometimes excess plastic can seep through the mold during manufacturing and will require trimming.

After removing the bottle from the mold and removing excess plastic, the bottles are ready for transportation. Materials Handling.

What We Do

The polymer and plastic industry is a multi-billion dollar industry which makes materials that impact nearly every aspect of our lives. These diverse materials are used in nearly every type of consumer or industrial product. From packaging and toys to electronics and space age materials, modern life would be quite different without them. However, handling and processing polymer raw materials can be challenging and require special safety and handling capabilities.

To prevent degradation when exposed to heat, cold and uv-light, plastics require stabilization. Specially designed plastic stabilizers protect the polymer during processing and ensure that plastic end products retain their physical properties during use, prolonging their life.

Methods of Manufacturing Plastic

Plastic is abundant in business and everyday life. You find it as product components, packaging and even in the containers used to ship products. For businesses interested in manufacturing or packaging their own products, an understanding of the major methods used in plastic manufacturing can prove useful in making decisions regarding which process best suits their purposes. Molding plastic to form specific products opens numerous avenues of invention for anyone willing to build the mold and create a functional and valuable product. One of the most common plastic manufacturing methods, injection molding lends itself to mass production of products ranging from cell phone stands to toys. The injection molding process melts resin pellets inside the injection machine with a heated barrel. An auger moves the plastic forward and ensures an even mix of melted plastic.

Process manufacturing is a branch of manufacturing that is associated with formulas and manufacturing recipes, [1] and can be contrasted with discrete manufacturing , which is concerned with discrete units, bills of materials and the assembly of components. Process manufacturing is common [2] in the food, beverage, chemical, pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, consumer packaged goods, cannabis, and biotechnology industries. In process manufacturing, the relevant factors are ingredients, not parts; formulas, not bills of materials; and bulk materials rather than individual units.

In the late s, the United States used over half of the world's natural rubber supply. Today, natural rubber can be found in over 50, manufactured products in the United States, and the U. Over 70 percent of rubber used in modern manufacturing processes, however, is synthetic rubber. Natural rubber begins as latex. Latex consists of the polymer called polyisoprene suspended in water. Long-chain molecules composed of many poly individual units mers connected together form polymers. Rubber is a special form of polymer called an elastomer, meaning that the polymer molecules stretch and flex.

As you search for plastics and rubber equipment, you need a selection wide enough to meet your specific needs. Materials are usually made in large quantities in continuous production plants that transform multiple feed stock materials into a compounded material for use in other facilities to produce end products. Similar processes are used to sort and recycle these same materials into a useful form.

Plastics are everywhere around us, but how much do you actually know about them? Plastics are synthetic materials that originally derive from organic products such as hydrocarbon fuels coal, natural gas, and crude oil , salt, sand, and a number of other possible constituents. Production begins with the processes of distillation and cracking in an oil refinery in which fractal groups of successively lighter hydrocarbon compounds are separated from the aggregate of raw material. Of particular interest to the plastic industry is a range of refined hydrocarbon distillates known collectively as Naphtha and used as key contributors in the manufacturing process for plastic polymers examples include ethylene C 2 H 4 , propylene C 3 H 6 , and butene C 4 H 8. Most plastics are created in one of two major processes: polymerization or polycondensation - sometimes known as chain growth and step growth polymerization respectively. In both cases, petroleum distillates are combined with specific catalysts to create novel, typically larger, molecules.
